The Nocturnists is a San Francisco-based independent medical storytelling community. At our live shows and on our podcast, healthcare workers share stories of joy, sorrow, and self-discovery.

Our work has been featured on CBS This Morning, NPR’s Snap Judgment, Pop Up Magazine, and in the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Magazine, and Bay Area Science Festival.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, we embarked on an urgent and unexpected adventure in serving our community.

Between the months of March and May, we collected over 700 audio diaries from healthcare workers across the nation. Selected clips from that audio library were aired on a 10-part audio documentary storytelling series, called “Stories from a Pandemic,” and one diarist’s story was featured in Pop Up Magazine’s Spring 2020 issue.

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020, The Nocturnists sought to give voice to the experience of Black healthcare workers.

We partnered with Dr. Ashley McMullen and Dr. Kimberly Manning to produce an audio diary series called “Black Voices in Healthcare,” which highlights stories of Black pain, Black joy, and Black excellence in medicine.

Since our humble beginnings in 2016, The Nocturnists has become much more than just a live show and podcast — it’s a vibrant community of healthcare workers who are celebrating their humanity through storytelling.

Welcome to the family.
